A broken display doesn't have to mean the end of your iMac. For almost all models with Intel processors (up to 2020), the display can be replaced - but: depending on the model, the effort and risk vary greatly. The crucial factor is whether you have an older iMac with a screwed display or a newer model with a glued front.
1. Screwed Displays (2009 - Mid 2012)
Models:
- iMac 21.5" (A1311)
- iMac 27" (A1312)
Recognizable by:
- Thick aluminum housing
- No Retina display
- Magnetically held front glass
Construction & Repair:
In these devices, the front glass is not glued but held by magnets. The display behind it is attached with regular screws.
Here's how the replacement works:
- Lift front glass with suction cups
- Unscrew display
- Disconnect cables and remove display
Assessment:
Doable for technically skilled people with the right tools. No heat gun needed, no adhesive - so relatively low risk. But: care is still required.
2. Glued Displays (Late 2012 - 2020)
Models:
- iMac 21.5" Retina/Non-Retina: A1418, A2116
- iMac 27" Retina 5K: A1419, A2115
- iMac Pro 27": A1862
Recognizable by:
- Slimmer housing ("Slim Design")
- Completely glued display unit
- Retina display on almost all variants
Important:
From late 2012, glass and LCD are a glued unit and fixed directly to the housing. The display replacement is technically extremely demanding - and comes with high risks.
What Can Go Wrong?
1. Display Breakage When Opening:
The front is attached with strong adhesive. Opening requires special rolling tools, precision - and patience. Using too much force or slipping risks destroying the panel, even if it was previously intact.
2. Cable Damage:
Extremely sensitive cables run directly along the edge - especially on the 21.5". If they're cut through, the damage is usually irreparable.
3. Dangerous 5K Displays (A1419, A2115, iMac Pro):
The connectors on the logic board are particularly delicate on these models. The locking mechanism can easily break - and then only a new logic board helps (cost: four figures).
How We Do It
We use special tools, precisely heat the adhesive areas, and separate the display unit in several controlled steps. Then we clean all residue and apply a new adhesive strip set - exactly like from the factory. This ensures the new display sits securely and dust-tight again.
Conclusion
- Models up to mid-2012: Display replacement is relatively straightforward - even for advanced users.
- Models from late 2012: Stay away from DIY. Specialized knowledge is required here, otherwise expensive consequential damage threatens.
