MacBook Keyboard and Trackpad Not Responding?

For A1502 a Cable Could Be the Cause

The Problem

A known issue with MacBook Pro models 13" (A1502) and 15" (A1398) from 2013-2015: The internal keyboard and trackpad suddenly fail at the same time.

The reason is often not a logic board or software error, but a small yet critical component: the trackpad cable.

Technical Cause

In these models, the keyboard controller is built directly into the trackpad. The keyboard is not directly connected to the logic board, but routes its signals through the trackpad.

The trackpad itself is connected to the logic board via a thin flex cable. This cable gets damaged over time by dust particles that accumulate between the cable and the bottom case.

During everyday use, the bottom case exerts pressure on these particles. They act like fine sandpaper and slowly destroy the traces in the cable. Once the connection is broken, the keyboard and trackpad no longer work.

Typical Symptoms

  • Keyboard and trackpad stop responding simultaneously
  • Temporary function possible when lifting the device or pressing on the bottom
  • External input devices (USB/Bluetooth) work without problems

Important: If external input devices work normally but the internal keyboard and trackpad fail simultaneously, this strongly indicates a trackpad cable problem.

Solution

In most cases, a trackpad cable replacement is sufficient. Only rarely is the trackpad itself affected. Both are significantly cheaper than a logic board repair.

We use high-quality replacement parts and thoroughly clean the area to prevent future damage.

If your MacBook is affected, it doesn't need to be replaced. The repair is straightforward and efficient.

Why This Repair Makes Sense

  • Significantly cheaper than logic board replacement
  • Fast repair - usually possible on the same day
  • High success rate - the problem is resolved in most cases
  • Preventive cleaning prevents future damage

Affected Models

This problem mainly occurs with the following MacBook models:

  • MacBook Pro 13" (A1502) - Years 2013-2015
  • MacBook Pro 15" (A1398) - Years 2013-2015

Newer models use a different cable routing and are less susceptible to this specific problem.
