Technical Differences: M1 vs. M2 Chips

In the rescued and all other M1 MacBook models, very fast memory is built from a quad-cluster of 128 GB each. In contrast to the M2 chip, around which (in the base models with 512 GB storage) a total of two larger but slower 256 GB memory modules are now connected.

The number of modules in this case also halves the number of memory channels available. Thus, almost only half the transfer rates are achieved.

So in the base models with M2 "only" around 3000 MByte/s for reading & writing are achieved. In the 2023 MacBook Pro in the 2 TB variant, however, it's back to business with 5000 MByte/s and 6000 MByte/s for reading & writing - values we're roughly used to from the M1 models.

The M1 Pro from the MacBook Pro has an 8 GB LPDDR5 Samsung RAM module on both sides. The M2 processor has become somewhat smaller again and combines two 4 GB SK Hynix RAM memory modules on each side. These 4 LPDDR5 RAM modules require less cooling overall and thus also find space in the MacBook Air M2.
