First: switch it off and stop trying

Why MacBook data recovery runs through the logic board

On Apple Silicon (M1 through M5) and on Intel Macs with the T2 chip, the storage is soldered onto the logic board and hardware-encrypted. Desoldering the NAND chips to read them leads nowhere: without the matching chip the contents stay unreadable. What does mail-in data recovery cost?

Where do the recovered files go – and what happens to the copies?

Your data ends up on an external SSD: either you include one in the parcel or you take one from the workshop. FileVault-encrypted data can only be decrypted with your password – and that stays true in the workshop too.

When even data recovery can't help

If the SoC or the NAND chips themselves are physically destroyed, board repair can't bring anything back either. That is rare, but it happens – and in that case it costs you nothing.
