MacBook Key Stuck or Not Working?
Understanding MacBook Keyboard Types
MacBook keyboards have evolved significantly over the years. Knowing which type you have helps with troubleshooting:
Butterfly Keyboard (2015-2019): Ultra-thin design but prone to dust and debris issues. Found in MacBook Pro 2016-2019 and MacBook Air 2018-2019.
Magic Keyboard (2020-present): Solid scissor mechanism with better key travel and reliability. Standard on all current MacBooks.
Common Causes of Stuck Keys
1. Dust and Debris: The most common cause, especially for Butterfly keyboards. Even tiny particles can prevent keys from functioning properly.
2. Liquid Damage: Spills can cause keys to stick or stop working entirely. The damage may not be immediately apparent.
3. Mechanical Failure: Key mechanisms can wear out or break, particularly the delicate clips on Butterfly keyboards.
4. Software Issues: Rarely, keyboard problems can be software-related, especially after system updates.
DIY Solutions to Try First
For Light Contamination:
- Use compressed air at an angle (not directly down)
- Hold your MacBook at 75 degrees and spray in a zig-zag pattern
- Tap around the affected key gently
WARNING: Never attempt to remove keys yourself, especially on Butterfly keyboards. The clips are extremely fragile and will break.
Repair Solutions
When DIY methods fail, repair is necessary:
- Keyboard Cleaning: Ultrasonic cleaning can resolve many issues
- Individual Key Repair: We can replace specific key mechanisms
- Keyboard Replacement: For extensive damage, we replace only the keyboard (not the entire top case)
This approach is more cost-effective than replacing the entire top case assembly.
Prevention Tips
- Use a keyboard cover for Butterfly keyboards
- Keep food and drinks away from your MacBook
- Clean your keyboard regularly with appropriate tools
- Consider AppleCare+ for Butterfly keyboard models
