Recognizing Graphics Problems in Classic and Modern MacBooks

Graphics Errors in MacBook Pro 15" 17" 2009–2015

MacBook Pro with typical graphics errors on the display

Models like the MacBook Pro 15" from 2009 to 2015 (e.g., A1286, A1398, A1297 2010 2011) are particularly prone to dGPU defects. Typical symptoms include flickering screens, colorful stripes, or no image. In many cases, a GPU replacement is necessary. The 2009 model also frequently experiences problems with capacitors in the graphics area. The MacBook Pro 17" from 2011 (A1297) also often has dGPU problems and usually requires a complete GPU replacement.

GPU removal on MacBook Pro A2141 during repair

The Touch Bar models like A1707, A1990, or the 16" MacBook Pro A2141 with Radeon Pro or Vega graphics chips often show pixel errors, crashes, or boot loops. Here too, replacing the graphics chip can permanently solve the problem. For the A1707 model, a complete logic board replacement is often the more economical solution, as we have refurbished boards in stock. For A1990 and A2141 – especially variants with larger GPUs – we offer targeted dGPU replacement, including configurations with extended VRAM.

New Issues with MacBook Pro with Apple Silicon M-Series (from 2020)

Even with MacBooks featuring Apple's M-series Silicon (e.g., M1, M2), display issues can occur, which are mostly software-based or caused by faulty display connections. Hardware defects are rarer but possible – these include problems with the display signal line, a damaged display connector on the mainboard, other components in this circuit, or in rare cases, an incorrectly programmed display ROM.

MacBook Air and Pro 13-inch: rare graphics damage, but possible

Since the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro 13-inch models do not have dedicated graphics chips, they are less frequently affected. In the case of display errors, the cause is often the display itself or the SSD/logic board.

Causes of Graphics Errors in Apple MacBooks

Overheating due to poor thermal conductivity

A common cause is heat exposure. The GPU chips slightly detach from the logic board due to repeated heat cycles, causing display errors or total failures.

Faulty production series

Some Apple series have had systematically faulty chipsets (e.g., AMD Radeon 2011, Vega 2019) that fail particularly often. We repair these by replacing them with stable successor chips.

Power supply errors

Defective capacitors or Power ICs (A1398 2012, A1297 2009) on the board can make the GPU unstable. Our board-level repair specifically replaces these components.
