MacBook keyboard repair: what it costs and which route makes sense

The short answer: a keyboard is renewed from €180, a trackpad from €160, speakers from €120 – and a complete top-case change with a refurbished top case from €120. What your device costs exactly is in the written quote that follows the free analysis; you decide only after that. Analysis and DHL shipping both ways cost nothing, and replaced parts carry a 12-month warranty.

What does a MacBook keyboard repair cost?

These are starting prices – what applies in your case depends on the model and on the damage:

  • Keyboard renewal: from €180 – depending on the case, single keys get re-seated or the entire keyboard assembly is changed.
  • Trackpad renewal: from €160 – Force Touch and Taptic Engine alignment included.
  • Speaker renewal: from €120 – including the glued speakers of the Apple Silicon models.
  • Top case changed as a whole: from €120 using a refurbished top case – sensible on a very old Mac or with a damaged housing.

The full service overview with all prices is on the MacBook keyboard repair page on emonis. A concrete cost estimate comes before every repair – decline it and nothing is charged.

Three cases from the workshop

  • MacBook Pro 14" (2021) – keyboard unit replaced on its own (mailed in from Lower Saxony): €360. The top case stayed original.
  • MacBook Air 13" (M4, 2025) – top-case repair with keyboard replacement and cleaning (mailed in from Lübeck): €380.
  • MacBook Air (M2, 2022) – top case repaired, trackpad replaced, logicboard cleaned (mailed in from the Bonn area): €480.

Single key or the whole top case?

Inside the top case, keyboard, trackpad, battery and speakers all sit together in a firmly riveted aluminium frame. The ordinary route is therefore to change the entire unit to save time – even when just one key is sticking.

Here your Mac lands on the microscope bench instead: the keyboard rivets are removed, glued parts eased apart, the new components fitted and fastened permanently with micro-screws. That takes longer but costs you less – and the original housing, battery and trackpad stay where they are.

A complete top-case change still makes more sense sometimes: on a very old device, with a bent or dented housing, or when keyboard, trackpad and battery have all gone at once. Which route is cheaper for your device is answered by the analysis, not over the phone.

Every keyboard generation comes through the shop: the Butterfly keyboard from 2015 to 2019, the Magic Keyboard from 2019 onward, and the Apple Silicon models up to the M5. Why the Butterfly models are so prone to failure, and which model years are affected, is covered in MacBook butterfly keyboard problems.

Is the repair worth it?

The arithmetic is usually quick: a replaced keyboard assembly keeps the machine running for years, your data stays untouched on the SSD, and replaced parts carry a 12-month warranty. The number to compare against is not what the device cost new, but what it is worth today.

Because the analysis costs nothing and shipping costs nothing either, the decision costs you nothing: you see the fixed price and say yes or no. How the same maths works out for other repair types: What does a MacBook repair cost?

Check it yourself before you mail it in

Four quick tests that may save you the shipping:

  • Connect an external keyboard. If that types cleanly, the fault is in the built-in keyboard and not in the system.
  • Compressed air for a key that only catches sometimes. Hold the MacBook at various angles and use short bursts. Do not pry the keycaps off yourself – the retaining clips break easily.
  • Check trackpad and keyboard for bulging. If something is pressing upward from beneath, the battery has usually swollen. That is a safety issue and should be looked at promptly – do not wait it out.
  • After coffee, water or wine: power off immediately. Do not switch the device back on and have it checked quickly, before corrosion sets in. What matters then: liquid-damage repair.

Frequently asked questions

What does a MacBook keyboard repair cost?

The keyboard is renewed from €180, the trackpad from €160, speakers from €120 and the complete top case from €120 using a refurbished top case. Analysis and shipping are free – the concrete price comes with the cost estimate before the repair.

Does one dead key mean the whole top case has to be replaced?

No. Keyboard, trackpad, battery and speakers are riveted to one another, which is why the whole unit ordinarily gets changed. On the microscope bench the faulty component is de-riveted and replaced on its own instead – your original housing stays in the device.

Is replacing a butterfly keyboard still worth it?

The affected models are the MacBook 12" (2015–2017), the MacBook Pro 13" and 15" (2016–2019) and the MacBook Air Retina (2018–2019). Whether a repair pays off for your model year depends on the condition of the rest of the device – the free analysis gives you the basis to decide. Can I mail my MacBook in for a keyboard repair?

Yes, from anywhere in Germany. At emonis.com/einsenden you request a free DHL label, the shipment is insured and return shipping is free as well. After the free analysis you decide based on the cost estimate.

How long does the repair take?

Allow 1–2 business days of shipping each way. The free analysis is usually done 1–3 working days after arrival; the repair time itself depends on the damage. You can see the status in the portal at any time.

Is there a warranty on the new keyboard?

Yes, replaced parts carry a 12-month warranty.

My trackpad no longer clicks – is that the same repair?

It is the same assembly. The trackpad is renewed from €160, with Force Touch and Taptic Engine alignment included. If the trackpad bulges upward from beneath, a swollen battery is usually behind it – that should be checked promptly.
