How long does a MacBook repair take? The phases and how long each one takes
The short answer: usually 3–6 working days in the workshop. Of that, 1–3 working days go to the free analysis up to the cost estimate; after your approval the repair itself usually takes one working day. For mail-in, DHL shipping of usually one working day each way and your decision time are added on top. Simple replacement jobs such as a battery swap are quicker, logic board repairs and data recovery can take longer – why is explained further down.

Where the figures come from
The times in this article come from an evaluation of our 2026 jobs – around 1,000 repairs from January to August, dropped off in Hamburg and mailed in from all over Germany. Each figure describes the typical case; the exceptions that take longer are described separately below. Working days are Monday to Friday, and the clock starts when the device arrives in the workshop: at the counter or when the parcel is unpacked.
The five phases of a repair – and how long each one takes
A repair consists of stages that behave very differently. The analysis and the repair itself are on us, the decision on the cost estimate is yours, and shipping is up to DHL.
| Phase | Dropped off in Hamburg | Sent in by DHL |
|---|---|---|
| Free analysis up to the cost estimate | Usually 1–3 working days; for battery and display usually the same day | Usually 1–3 working days after arrival; questions about the password or a backup go by email and cost time |
| Your decision on the cost estimate | Usually the same day, often right on the phone | Up to you – the faster the answer, the shorter the total |
| Repair after your approval | Usually 1 working day | Usually 1 working day |
| Typical total time in the workshop | 3–6 working days; simple replacement jobs often faster | 3–6 working days plus your decision time |
| DHL shipping each way | – | Usually delivered the next working day; 98 out of 100 parcels within 2 working days |
What stands out is where the time actually goes: the repair after approval usually takes just one working day in both cases. The total is decided before that – in the analysis, where parcels more often need a follow-up question about the password or a backup, and in the decision, which is made the same day less often by email than at the counter.
How long does the repair take by type?
Typical workshop time by repair type, drop-off and mail-in combined. "Analysis" is the time from arrival to the cost estimate, "repair" the time from your approval to the final check; your decision time and shipping are added on top.
| Repair | Analysis | Repair after approval | Typical workshop time | What can extend it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Battery replacement | same day | same day | 1–2 working days | missing password for the final test |
| Display repair | same day | 1 working day | 2–3 working days | display for a rare model has to be ordered |
| Keyboard and top case | 1 working day | 1 working day | 3–4 working days | top case has to be ordered |
| Liquid damage | 2–3 working days | 1 working day | 3–5 working days | corrosion: second round of checks after cleaning |
| Logic board repair | 2–3 working days | 1 working day | 4–6 working days | component-level fault finding, waiting for parts |
| Data recovery | 2–3 working days | 1–2 working days | 5–7 working days | reading out a failing SSD runs for days |
Battery and display are replacement jobs with parts in stock: the analysis is usually done the same day, and 6 out of 10 batteries are swapped on the day of approval. With liquid damage the board first has to be cleaned and dried before the damage can be assessed at all – which is why the analysis takes 2–3 working days here. Logic board repairs need the longest analysis because the fault is traced at component level, and data recovery has the widest spread: reading out a failing SSD can run for days.
Drop off or mail in – where is the difference?
It is the same workshop, the same technicians and the same queue. Still, a mail-in repair takes longer door to door than a drop-off in Hamburg. Three reasons explain almost all of it:
- The analysis more often needs a follow-up question. A parcel is unpacked, registered and checked; if the password or the backup status is missing, a question goes out by email first – and waits for an answer.
- Decisions take longer by email than at the counter. Customers who drop off usually get the estimate by phone and decide on the spot. With mail-in, waiting for the answer is often the longest part of the whole job – while the device sits ready for repair.
- Shipping is added on top. From posting to delivery usually takes one working day, and 98 out of 100 parcels arrive within 2 working days. Count the return leg as well.
What a mail-in repair looks like step by step is covered in Mail-in MacBook repair.
The exceptions: when it takes longer than 6 working days
Some repairs take considerably longer than the typical range. The most common reasons:
- Corrosion after liquid. After cleaning, the board is tested again; if further damage shows up, a second round of analysis and estimate follows.
- Data recovery. Reading out a failing SSD runs in stages and sometimes over several days; here the workshop time sits at the upper end of the range or beyond it.
- Part not in stock. Batteries and common displays are on the shelf; a specific top case or a rare display has to be ordered.
- Missing password. Without a login the system cannot be tested fully. For mail-in devices the follow-up question often costs a day – you can add the password in the portal at any time.
- The decision. The cost estimate waits for your answer. For some mail-in devices this phase alone takes longer than the whole repair.
How to make it faster
You have little influence on the analysis and repair time, but a lot on the waiting around it:
- Provide the password or PIN – at drop-off, or in the portal after sending the device in.
- Describe the fault precisely: what happens when, since when, after which event? Why that shortens the analysis is explained in Poor error descriptions harm your Mac.
- Say whether a backup exists and whether the data matters – then nobody has to ask before the first step.
- Post the parcel on the day the label is created. The label takes seconds; the parcel then often sits at home for days.
- Answer the cost estimate promptly – a no is an answer too, and the device comes back free of charge.

Simple replacement jobs such as a battery swap are quicker, logic board repairs and data recovery can take longer.
How long does the analysis take?
Usually 1–3 working days after arrival: for battery and display usually the same day, for liquid damage 2–3 working days because the board is cleaned and dried first. The analysis is free and ends with the cost estimate.
How long does a battery replacement take?
Usually the same or the next working day – 6 out of 10 batteries are swapped on the day of approval. For mail-in, shipping of usually one working day each way is added.
How long does a display repair take?
Typically 2–3 working days in the workshop: the analysis is usually done the same day, the replacement after approval usually takes one working day. If a display for a rare model has to be ordered, it takes longer.
How long does a logic board repair take?
Typically 4–6 working days of pure workshop time: 2–3 working days of component-level fault finding up to the cost estimate, then usually one working day of repair after approval. Including your decision time, arrival to final check usually takes one to one and a half weeks; waiting for parts or heavy corrosion can extend it.
How long does a liquid damage repair take?
Typically 3–5 working days: cleaning, drying and analysis take 2–3 working days, the repair after approval usually one working day. If further damage shows up after cleaning, a second round of checks with a new estimate follows.
How long does DHL shipping take?
From posting, the parcel usually arrives the next working day; 98 out of 100 of our parcels arrived within 2 working days in 2026. Shipping both ways is free and insured.
What can I do to speed things up?
Provide the device password, describe the fault as precisely as possible, post the parcel on the day the label is created and answer the cost estimate promptly. For mail-in jobs, waiting for that answer is often where most of the time goes.
