Your MacBook stays black, no longer charges, or simply switches off in the middle of your work? Behind many of these symptoms sits the logic board – the device's main circuit board. This article explains what the logic board actually is, how to recognise a defect, which causes are typical, and why component-level repair usually beats a full board swap. What is the logic board, anyway?

Logic board is Apple's name for the main circuit board – what other computers call the motherboard. Practically everything the MacBook needs to run sits on this board: the processor, the graphics unit, the RAM, the charging circuitry, the ports, and on all newer models the SSD holding your data.

On MacBooks with Apple Silicon (M1 to M5) and on Intel models with the T2 chip, RAM and SSD are soldered in place. That makes the logic board more than just one board among many – it effectively is the whole computer. If a single component on it fails, the entire device stops working, even though the display, battery, keyboard and case are perfectly fine.

Typical symptoms of a logic board defect

A logic board defect rarely announces itself with a clear error message. These are the signs we see most often in the workshop:

  • No reaction at all: The MacBook won't turn on – no startup chime, no fan, no keyboard backlight, even after hours on the charger.
  • No longer charges: The MagSafe LED stays dark, or the device only recognises the power adapter on some USB-C ports. A failed charging IC is a frequent culprit.
  • Shuts off under load: The MacBook switches off abruptly or restarts during demanding tasks – often a problem in the power circuitry on the board.
  • Screen stays black, device runs: Fan or keyboard backlight come on, but no image appears – this can be the display, but just as easily the video output on the logic board.
  • Dead ports and modules: USB-C ports, Wi-Fi or the built-in camera stop working – the controllers responsible sit on the board.
  • Battery not recognised: macOS reports "No battery available" even though the battery itself is fine.

Common causes: how a logic board fails

Liquid – the number one cause

Coffee, water, tea: a few drops are enough if they run into the case at the wrong spot. Liquid causes short circuits and starts creeping corrosion that keeps attacking traces and components for weeks. That's why the rule after any liquid damage is: switch off immediately, don't switch back on, get it cleaned quickly.

Power surges and faulty chargers

Cheap power adapters and damaged cables don't always deliver clean voltage. A surge hits the charging circuitry on the board first – a classic case is a burnt-out charging IC, after which the MacBook neither charges nor starts. Faulty USB-C devices and hubs can introduce damage through the ports as well.

Ageing and heat

A logic board spends years cycling through temperature changes: heating up, cooling down, heating up. Solder joints and components age in the process. At some point a capacitor, a voltage regulator or a MOSFET gives out – with no external trigger, the device seemingly "dies" overnight. Dust in the fan accelerates this by degrading the cooling.

Drops and mechanical damage

A drop can cause hairline cracks in solder joints or in the board itself. Typically the MacBook still works right after the fall, then fails days or weeks later when a cracked connection finally breaks.

How a logic board defect is diagnosed

Hundreds of components sit on the board – the real work is finding the one that failed. The board is removed and measured on a bench power supply: which voltage rails are present, which are missing, where is too much current flowing? With schematics, a multimeter and a thermal camera, a short circuit or a dead voltage regulator can be pinpointed. Only once the cause is known can the repair be priced – which is why our diagnosis is free and without obligation.

Component-level repair instead of a board swap

The standard answer to a logic board defect is replacing the entire board – along with the processor, memory and soldered SSD. Technically, that's rarely necessary: in most cases only a single component has failed, and it exists as a spare part for a few euros.

Component-level repair means desoldering and replacing exactly that part under the microscope – a charging IC, a voltage regulator, a shorted capacitor. The rest of the board stays untouched. The advantages:

  • Considerably cheaper: A full board swap quickly costs two or three times as much as a targeted component repair – on older models it often exceeds the value of the device.
  • Your data stays in place: The SSD with all your data sits on the board and is untouched by the repair (more on this below).
  • Works for older models too: Individual components remain available long after complete replacement boards for a model have disappeared.
  • More sustainable: Scrapping a working board over one dead chip is simply wasteful.

Not every board can be saved – widespread corrosion or a destroyed main processor puts limits on component-level repair as well. But that is the exception, not the rule. You'll find an overview of the service on our logic board repair page.

What data preservation means – and why it depends on the board

On all Apple Silicon MacBooks and on Intel models with the T2 chip, the SSD is soldered to the logic board and hardware-encrypted. That has a consequence many people only discover when disaster strikes:

If the board is swapped, the data is gone. The key that decrypts the SSD lives in the security chip of that one specific board – it doesn't exist on a replacement board. If the defective board is repaired instead, the MacBook boots again with your system, your apps and all your data. Nothing needs to be set up again, nothing restored from a backup.

That depends on the model, the damage and your needs. As a rule of thumb: the more precisely the defect can be isolated, the cheaper the repair – and a 2019 MacBook Pro or an M1 model remains a fully capable machine for years after a board repair. Frequently asked questions

How can I tell whether the logic board or the battery is defective?

A drained or defective battery usually shows itself when the MacBook works on the power adapter but dies immediately without it. If the device stays completely dead even on a known-good adapter, or won't charge at all, that points to the charging circuitry on the logic board. The only way to know for certain is measuring the board itself.

Can I fix a logic board defect myself?

You can rule out software causes yourself – for example with the steps in our "MacBook won't start" guide. Repairing the board itself requires micro-soldering, schematics and measuring equipment, and is not a DIY project. The most important thing: after liquid contact, don't keep switching the device on – that makes the damage worse.

Does my data survive a logic board repair?

Yes. Component-level repair replaces only the faulty part; the soldered SSD stays untouched. After the repair, the MacBook boots with your familiar system and all your data. Only swapping the complete board would cost you the data – which is exactly why we repair instead of replacing.
